This is a border specialty, somewhere between dentistry and general medicine, which mainly deals with diagnosing and treating the affections of the oral mucous membrane.

The affections can appear in relations to general diseases of the body (dermatological diseases, allergies, metabolic and nutrition diseases such as diabetes, blood affections such as leukaemia or anaemia, HIV, Syphilis, TBC), or they can be specific affections of the oral cavity, tumorous - benign and malign, infectious (viral such as herpes, bacterial, mycotic), autoimmune (oral aphthae), allergic (resulted from the contact with various dentistry materials), traumatic ones.

Many of these affections are treated with indifference by the patients and even by the physicians, although certain lesions are well-known for their cancerous potential in the absence of specialised treatment.
